YAMAMOTO, T.Y., TONOSAKI, A. and WATANABE, H. Complementary Faces of the Rod Disc Membrane in Freeze-Fracture Replicas. Tohoku J. exp. Med., 1974, 113 (4), 313-317 Replicas from complementary freeze-fracture faces of the rabbit rod outer segments were examined in an electron microscope. By this method two dissimilar faces, A and B, were visualized in a disc. The A face, toward the inteadisc space, was characterized by densely packed particles, about 10 nm in diameter, rising on it; and the B face, toward the interdisc space, appear ed smooth with minute unevennesses. An A face always formed a complementary set with a B face, and vice versa. No evidence has been obtained to suggest that a disc membrane may split along two or more different fracture planes. freeze-fracture method; rod outer segment; visual cell; retina

Complementary plasma membrane fracture faces in freeze-etch replicas.

Recent studies have all shown that membranes fracture internally during freeze-etching or freeze-cleaving, confirming that 2 internal membrane faces are produced. That these faces are not complementary is one of the main features of freeze-etch replicas still requiring explanation. In the present investigation certain plasma membranes in light organs of the New Zealand glow worm are found to be...

An Interpretation of Liver Cell Membrane and Junction Structure Based on Observation of Freeze-fracture Replicas of Both Sides of the Fracture

A modification of the freeze-fracturing technique to permit observation of replicas of both sides of the fracture is described. It has been used to study mouse liver cell membrane structure. Membranes break to give two faces with three-dimensional complementarity, although there is some small-scale mismatching which is discussed. Since the two distinctive sets of membrane faces are complementar...

Fracture faces in the cell envelope of Escherichia coli.

Freeze-fracturing of Escherichia coli cells in the presence of 30% (v/v) glycerol resulted in a double cleavage of the cell envelope exposing two convex and two concave fracture faces ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) with characteristic patterns. Complementary replicas revealed the relationship of the fracture faces to their corresponding f...

Freeze-fracture analysis of the membrane lesion of human complement

The structure and membrane insertion of the human C5b-9(m) complex, generated by lysis of antibody-coated sheep erythrocytes with whole human serum under conditions where high numbers of classical ring-shaped lesions form, were studied in single and complementary freeze-fracture replicas prepared by unidirectional and rotary shadowing. The intramembrane portion of the C5b-9(m) cylinder was seen...

A thin-section and freeze-fracture study of microfilament-membrane attachments in choroid plexus and intestinal microvilli

Choroid plexus and intestinal microvilli in thin sections have microfilaments in the cytoplasm adjacent to the membranes, and in replicas have broken strands of filaments in both cytoplasm and on E faces of plasm membranes. The microfilaments contain actin as indicated by their binding of heavy meromyosin (HMM). In sections of choroid plexus, the microfilaments are 7-8 nm in diameter and form a...
